FAQ: How to Choose the Right Custom Dining Table

When customers come to us for a custom dining table, the first question is almost always: “What size should it be?”

The truth is, size is just one part of the equation. Choosing the right table involves balancing space, seating, style, and material. Here’s our guide to the most important things to consider:

  1. Room Size & Clearance

Before you think about length or width, look at the room itself.

    • Leave 2–3 feet of clearance on all sides of the table.
    • A table that’s too large can make a room feel crowded.
    • A table that’s too small can make a room feel empty or unfinished.

Consider other furniture (sideboards, hall tables, credenzas) that might compete for space.

  2. Table Size & Seating Capacity

Length and width matter. Standard dining tables are usually 36–42 inches wide. Going wider than 42–48 inches usually doesn’t add seating until you reach about 55–60 inches—at which point engineering and support become more complex (and cost increases).

Capacity depends on table length, shape, and chair size. (See our seating guide image/chart.) The image below is a good reference for how many people can "comfortably" seat around a table depending on size and shape.

  3. Shape of the Table
    • Rectangular – classic and versatile.
    • Round – great for smaller rooms; promotes conversation.
    • Square – best for square rooms; modern, intimate feel.
  4. Wood Species

Durability: Some woods are harder and more resilient; others are softer and less ideal for heavy use.

Appearance: Look, color, and grain come down to personal preference. (See our Wood Species Guide.)

  5. Style of the Table
    1. Search for “dining table styles.”
    2. Save examples that catch your eye.
    3. Share them with us—we’ll translate your inspiration into a custom design.
  6. Seating Options
    • Chairs define exact capacity.
    • Benches can fit more people in less space.

We can also source high-quality chairs that match your table.

  7. Standard Dining Table Height

Most dining tables are 29–31 inches tall. Length and width vary by room and need; height typically stays in this range.
